Note to SEC: Texas A&M needs another Thanksgiving Rival

As y’all know by this blog, we love the SEC and we’re really happy that two teams have been added to the SEC schedule. Missouri’s going to be a  cold and difficult place for rivals to play in the East, and Texas A&M’s going to be a deafening place to play in the West. But let’s be honest – when it became known that Texas A&M was not going to play Texas anymore, it ripped a lot out of college football’s soul. For over 118 years, Texas and Texas A&M beat the crap out of each other. Even if both sides weren’t good, they were got off the turf for The Thanksgiving Game of All Thanksgiving Games. Fanbases may not

Scheduling: SEC games open ESPN’s CFB season

ESPN will be showing two SEC games on the first night of the season, the network announced. South Carolina’s tricky trip to Vanderbilt and Texas A&M first game of its SEC existence – against Louisiana Tech- will be shown on ESPN and ESPNU respectively. We’ll go out on a limb and say that we expect the Aggies- yes, even with THAT defence – to win that one comfortably. You should also keep an eye out for September 13th, when former Auburn offensive co-ordinator Gus Malzahn takes his Arkansas State team on the road to noisy Lincoln, Nebraska for a showdown with the mighty Nebraska Cornhuskers. Later that day, Mississippi State go to Troy (you can watch it online on ESPN3).

The SEC Football Blog will have breakdown of each team’s schedule in our preview for the season, but right now, here’s a taster of what’s to come. And yes, we know that the No.1 game on everybody’s list is going to be Alabama’s trip to LSU on November 3rd, which will be shown live on CBS at night – an arrangement which was actually agreed last year during the fiasco of the LSU-Alabama game in 2011. The home games are IN CAPS – just in case any of you though Alabama was scheduling a trip to Ole Miss for the second

SEC officially announces Independence Bowl tie-in

The SEC has officially announced its Independence Bowl tie-in with the ACC. The bowl, which will be played in Shreveport, Louisiana, will see the SEC’s No.9 team played the ACC’s No.6 team, and be bound in for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The bowl will be sponsored by 2012 AdvoCare V100. “We are obviously thrilled to be back in the game with the SEC,” said Jack Andres, the Independence Bowl’s chairman in a statement. “We enjoyed 15 years of success with them from 1995-2009, and we’ve hosted 10 of their teams in our game, including newcomers Texas A&M and most recently Missouri. Our local ticket buyers and sponsors are familiar with the teams in the SEC and we hope this will generate even

Yet Another bowl game? SEC adds new bowl to list

The SEC has added a new bowl to its list – and this time it’s not a deal with the Pac-10 or Big Ten…or even Big XII. Anyway, the SEC – according to a tweet from CBS writer Brett McMurphy – has signed a deal that will see the SEC add the Independence Bowl to its growing list of bowls – with the much-maligned ACC as its partner. The deal – the SEC’s 10th bowl in all – will be for 2012 and 2013, and will see the SEC’s No. 10 play the ACC’s No.7 team. The great news for SEC fans is that the Bowl’s in Shreveport, Louisiana, meaning that it’ll be close enough for most SEC schools to

SEC Spring Meetings: Winners/Losers

The SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Fl. weren’t low on discussion. To make it a quick read (and to not try and tread on too much old ground, The SEC Football Blog brings you a (not completely complete) list of winners and losers from the three days of meetings. If you have any more, please comment! WINNERS The supporters of tradition: The SEC voted for the 6-1-1 schedule to stick around for the next half a decade, meaning that the century-old Auburn-Georgia and Alabama – Tennessee rivalries stay intact. And so does the LSU vs Florida game, which has been going for a mere 41 years, which is just a smidgeon shorter than how old Les Miles is (and yes,

Spring Meetings: SEC coaches vote in $300-per-game stipend

The SEC coaches might have just done something that could change the course of college football. This tweet came from Scott Hood at Gamecock Central: Scott Hood ‏@ScottHood63 In case you missed it, Steve Spurrier told me last night the SEC coaches unanimously approved giving FB players $300 per game for expenses. This isn’t just big news. This is massive news. This could mean that players are at least paid for playing – taking back some of the money that schools, clothing companies and other parties (yes, even college football blogs!) so happily take from them year in, year out. Hood played this down slightly, saying it probably wouldn’t get through the Athletic Directors and Presidents: Scott Hood ‏@ScottHood63: The key question, though,

Spring Meetings: Les Miles’ interview with SEC TV

In his chat with the SEC’s Buzz Baker, Les Miles – wearing a rather loud yellow shirt – and not with all his children (they are on camp, apparently!) – had some soundbytes. Sorry if the quotes aren’t exact: The season: We played three 2nd ranked teams and beat them all. We played 13 great teams, and the one we didn’t so well in was the National Championship game, unfortunately. Our team understands they were in the SEC West and now they have a Championship banner that no-one else hangs. Motivation for the future?: They are excited with playing and they are looking forward to it. The team for 2012: Good on defense, and the offense will be much better.

Could the SEC bolt for UNC and Duke?

As we know, the SEC is no stranger to expanding its reach. South Carolina and Arkansas came aboard in 1991. Missouri and Texas A&M came aboard in 2012. But could Duke and UNC come along and be part of SEC country, giving them not only dominance in football, but also – dear God – basketball? Why do we ask this question? Tonight, we were at a charity function and got talking to someone still involved with Duke who told us: “It wasn’t so long ago that we and UNC were talking to the SEC about moving there”. He also remarked that Florida State would go to the Big XII, but wasn’t so sure about Clemson’s ambitions. With the way the
