If your SEC Coaches were one big frat

Just heard from the SEC: “The coaches aren’t just a group of head coaches, they are a fraternity”. In our mind, they’ve gotta be SAEs, because they’ve got a ton of money and attract the Rock-Hunters. But we might be wrong. Kirby Smart: ‘The Prez’ has got the SEC hairdo, is slightly overweight, and can’t get enough of his visor. Doesn’t care what his guys do with their cars. After a few beers he can get belligerent and wants to fight everyone. But he wins. And that’s what this lot of SAEs care about. Barks at people. Eli Drinkwitz: ‘Smirky’ causes most of the crap and runs away having caused an almighty explosion. He’s dangerous because everyone likes his humor

Previewing all Power-4 Conference Championships

As we said recently, our take on Conference Championships this year is that they don’t matter. It’s not a way of teams ‘settling it on the field’, it’s a money-grab by the conferences. That’s not to say that the winners won’t be over-the-moon and the losers won’t feel the pain of defeat, but there’s not as much skin in the game. And in the SEC Championship Game and B1G Championship Games, which feature Georgia-Texas and Oregon-Penn State, this is particularly the case. All teams play the games extra close, then the Top 4 won’t change. On the other side, it’s jeopardy on steroids in the Big 12 and ACC Championship games though. The loser of the ACC (SMU and Clemson)

AP Poll, ESPN Polls are out: Where SEC teams stand

First of all, the SEC could get four in the Play-Off (Georgia, Texas, Tennessee and one of Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina), but it’s unlikely. But the SEC Championship is set: Georgia v Texas in Atlanta. The AP Poll has made everything really interesting for SEC teams. We’ll keep you updated with the Play-Off Committee’s thoughts on Tuesday. Oh, and we think the SEC Championship Game is a waste of time. All the game is going to give us is injuries.  And both sets of fans — while there is certainly going to be a massive boost to their egos by winning the conference — would rather have a week (or two) off before the play-offs.  TEAMS DEFINITELY IN

A BRIEF Thanksgiving Football Preview

OK, we’re writing this at the opening salvo of The Egg Bowl (still 0-0), and the notion of ‘we need to get this done earlier this week’ got thrown to the layby because of the Thanksgiving break and two toddlers who refused to sleep. Anyway, we’re going high-speed for all the games this week. FRIDAY We’ve covered the Ole Miss v Mississippi State game and why we’re watching it, so there’s little point in a preview. Sorry, Lane.  GEORGIA TECH AT NO.7 GEORGIA (-17.5) Why should you be interested? Georgia’s very much in a play-off hunt. Otherwise, we expect Georgia – if they have a comfortable lead by the fourth quarter – to take their pedal off the medal to

Thanks to craziness, Georgia’s back in Atlanta

Thanks to untold madness happening around them, the Georgia Bulldogs are back in the SEC Championship Game. They will face off against the winner of Texas and Texas A&M, who play on Thanksgiving Saturday. Texas A&M – despite losing to Auburn – will get in because they win the head-to-head against Texas, while Texas would go to Atlanta to face a rematch with the Bulldogs if they beat Texas A&M – therefore winning out. It’s gonna be one hell of a Saturday. Right now, trying to rank everyone is stupid, bearing in mind how much Ole Miss kicked itself in the nuts against Florida, how Texas A&M lost in four overtimes to a dreadful Auburn (thank God for the 2-pt

SEC Preview: This SEC week is going to be a strugglebus….

First of all, there are five SEC teams getting in the College Football Play-Off as things stand. That’s Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee. Texas A&M and possibly South Carolina are on the outside looking in. Of course Greg Sankey more in, but so does every conference. The street-fight is going to get boring, and we’ll going to give you the lowdown on tie-breakers next week. The second thing: This SEC week is a struggle to preview, because most of the games aren’t great – one of this blog’s endless bug-bears is that any of these games actually exist at this time of year. SO, GAMES WE ARE INTERESTED IN:  No.5 Indiana at No.2 Ohio State (-12.5): We’d love to

Texas? Georgia? A&M? Tennessee? Who’s going to get in?

OK, so it’s about that time when we try and work out what in the hell’s going on. With the four-teams-getting-selected-to-the-play-off-thing, it was pretty easy. Generally, the two teams in the SEC Championship got in, and the rest was the other guys. But now, it’s 4 conference winners (SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12) + Notre Dame (on a good season) + The top non-4 conference team. That means that it’s a bun-fight of epic proportions for the other three spots. If you by the AP Top 25, then here are the teams in: Oregon Ohio State  Texas Penn State Indiana Notre Dame Alabama Georgia Ole Miss Tennessee  Miami   Boise State The Top Big 12 team, by the way, is

Florida Keeps Napier: Why this is a good idea

News came through for Florida Gators that embattled head coach Billy Napier would stay on for at least another season. Gators AD said: “As we’ve seen these past several weeks, the young men on this team represent what it means to be a Gator. Their resolve, effort and execution are evident in their performance and growth each week — building a foundation that promises greater success next season and beyond…I am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.” SO WHY WASN’T HE SHOVED? The Gators had performed as expected, with a 4-4 record (2-3 SEC). The wins against Kentucky and Mississippi State were comfortable (ie no upsets), and the losses to Georgia, Tennessee and Texas A&M were

SEC Rankings: Texas A&M is the best team in the SEC

So here are our rankings for the SEC….   Texas A&M (7-1): The Aggies beat LSU on Saturday night, meaning that they have the SEC’s only unbeaten record. And looking at the schedule- and we’re increasingly confident that they’ll beat Texas at Thanksgiving – they should face off against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. What Mike Elko has done so well is recognize when his quarterback’s playing terribly, and change him (See Conor Weigman for Marcel Reed – who has wheels and a good arm) out. Georgia (6-1): After losing to Alabama and then two very ordinary performances against Auburn and Missisippi State, Georgia came to Texas and rolled – mostly on the strength of their defense, which forced
