Bama left out: Who’s to blame?
Read moreFirst of all, the SEC could get four in the Play-Off (Georgia, Texas, Tennessee and one of Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina), but it’s unlikely. But the SEC Championship is set: Georgia v Texas in Atlanta. The AP Poll has made everything really interesting for SEC teams. We’ll keep you updated with the Play-Off Committee’s thoughts on Tuesday. Oh, and we think the SEC Championship Game is a waste of time. All the game is going to give us is injuries. And both sets of fans — while there is certainly going to be a massive boost to their egos by winning the conference — would rather have a week (or two) off before the play-offs. TEAMS DEFINITELY IN
Read moreOK, we’re writing this at the opening salvo of The Egg Bowl (still 0-0), and the notion of ‘we need to get this done earlier this week’ got thrown to the layby because of the Thanksgiving break and two toddlers who refused to sleep. Anyway, we’re going high-speed for all the games this week. FRIDAY We’ve covered the Ole Miss v Mississippi State game and why we’re watching it, so there’s little point in a preview. Sorry, Lane. GEORGIA TECH AT NO.7 GEORGIA (-17.5) Why should you be interested? Georgia’s very much in a play-off hunt. Otherwise, we expect Georgia – if they have a comfortable lead by the fourth quarter – to take their pedal off the medal to
Read moreGeorgia’s off to its second rough road game in three games, this time rolling into Oxford, where expectancy’s back to being sky-high after the Rebs smashed Arkansas on the road. Had they lost that, Lane Kiffin might be facing the hurricane of rage — as well as an almost-certain miss from a play-off spot. It’s gonna be fun in Oxford. It’s also Bama-LSU weekend, which is going to get everyone very excited. It’s also going to be a lot of fun because of the level of jeopardy on this, with the loser likely not to make the play-off. The atmosphere – even without Nick Saban there as a head coach – is likely to be off the hook (Going to
Read moreAt the end of the season, we’ll be talking about great games. If the Alabama v Georgia game isn’t in your Top 2, you’re probably wrong. They played out a crazy, wonderful, game-of-two-halves classic that was finished with a crazy-brilliant touchdown by a kid who happens to be the 17-year old cousin of one Serena Williams Anyway, here are our rankings after Week 5 of the SEC season. 1. Alabama: Calen DeBoer’s gonna win games he should have lost (see last season v Oregon and Texas) and lose games he should have won. His clock management will be questionable. But through all of this, he will be bloody entertaining to watch. It’s gonna be some ride, Alabama fans. 2. Tennessee:
Read moreAlabama has hired former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer as head coach. Under DeBoer’s tutelage, the Huskies made the National Championship Game after an unbeaten regular season and beating Texas in the semi-final, where they were hammered by Michigan (after playing zero defense in the first quarter). News of DeBoer’s contract aren’t out yet, but it should be a pretty seamless offensive move. DeBoer’s team averaged 36 points per game last year, and 39.7 the year before in his two years in Seattle, en route to an overall 25-3 record. He has an overall coaching record of an astonishing 104-12 – although some of this was at the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota, a NAIA school. Alabama will
Read moreAfter they beat Georgia in the National Championship Game and Florida State’s offense looked so ragged against Louisville, it seemed inevitable that Alabama was going to be the final team into the College Football Play-Off. They will play No.1 Michigan, while No.2 Washington and No.3 Texas face off in the other one. Georgia fans could moan about not being one of the best teams in, but they sank themselves by back-to-back not-great performances against Georgia Tech and Alabama respectively. In the end, they ended up No.6 in the nation, and will face Florida State in the Orange Bowl – something we suspect won’t have a lot of weight if you consider the amount of players who won’t play. But the bottom
Read moreIt’s award season, so we want to throw around some awards ourselves, before those Heisman people get in our way and make us look bad. So here we go. Some of them for the best….some of them for the worst. Thanks for a wonderful season. FEEL FREE TO TELL US WHERE WE WERE WRONG! SEC HEISMAN Jayden Daniels (LSU): Daniels hardly put a foot wrong this season, throwing for 3,800 yards and 40 TDs and rushing for 1,100 yards more and 10 more. He’s on the real Heisman favorite, too. Nominated: Cody Schrader (Missouri), Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss) Jayden Daniels won the Heisman. SEC RUSHER OF THE YEAR Cody Schrader (Missouri): Ran for 1,499 yards and 13 yards in the
Read moreLike any good divorces, it finished because of money. CBS had the media deal of a lifetime, only spending $825 million to the SEC on a 15-year contract, giving the schools $55 million per year each and itself the primary rights to each weekend. They refused to move on the ‘Best Contract On Earth’, and when ESPN threw in a $3 billion, 10-year offer for the conference, the SEC jumped at it. And so at this year’s SEC Championship game, we say goodbye to an old friend…. On Saturday afternoon, we bid goodbye to CBS’ coverage on CBS, which has been the partner of the Conference That Means The Most for 20 years. Most of the coverage of the last
Read moreNormally, if a team’s the No.1 team in the nation, then they would usually be No.1 on our SEC rankings. But aside from the fact that Georgia’s schedule is medicore-to-dreadful, they haven’t looked wonderful on offense, and aren’t clicking in enough gears to get the No.1 spot. So here are the rankings: Ole Miss (2-0): Beat Tulane 37-20 and looked increasingly comfortable as the game went on. Judkins is a weapon, and Jaxson Dart is looking increasingly comfortable within the offense. Look, there are still things to iron out (they were 1-13 on 3rd downs), but a ‘scrappy’ offense that wins is better than none at all. Tennessee (2-0): Tennessee’s offense sputtered against Austin Peay, but they still ran out in
