SEC Preview: Is Alabama really an underdog?

This is going to sound incredibly silly, but Alabama may well go into this season as an underdog. Not in many games, but in the National Championship discussion. For years, there isn’t an Alabama player that’s been especially memorable. The rock stars  – like Will Anderson Jr or Bryce Young are gone. Jahmyr Gibbs is gone. Henry To’oto’o is gone.  That’s a hell of a lot of talent. The reason for this is simple: Alabama was meant to be everything when Young and Gibbs were anchoring the offense and Anderson, Demarco Hellams, Brian Branch and To’oto’o were anchoring the defense. Instead they lost the 2021 National Championship Game and didn’t even get to the 2022 Play-Off, despite only losing to LSU

Tennessee news: What do we make of it?

Saddening news came out of Knoxville last night that former Tennesssee wide receiver Drae Bowles was assaulted by fellow players after he helped “the woman who accused linebacker A.J. Johnson and defensive back Mike Williams of rape in November 2014,” the Knoxville News-Sentinel has reported. In November 14 2014 former UT linebacker AJ Johnson and defensive back Mike Williams raped a woman during a party at a football players’ house, in which alcohol and marijuana were used. And then comes the Bowles incident. According to the lawsuit the victim “received a message from Plaintiff Doe V who was witnessing (at that moment) several football players “jumping” Drae Bowles, a member of the football team that had actually taken Plaintiff Doe IV to

SEC Prediction: Is Tennessee A Dark Horse for the SEC East this year?

If you haven’t heard, Derek Dooley’s out of his job as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. When? About December, 2012. We jest, but you get the point: Mr Dooley’s under huge pressure to get the 2012 right at Neyland Stadium after two years of debacle, and our thought is this: Shouldn’t we be thinking of the Vols as a dark horse for the division, rather than an also ran? LAST SEASON As awful as people who like you to think Tennessee was last year, we’d like to put this out there: The Vols were also hellish unlucky with injuries. They lost their best wide receiver Justin Hunter in their third  game of the season against Florida. Their QB, Tyler

Penn State: Richt looking at Penn State LB

Mark Richt has admitted that Georgia is already looking at Penn State players after NCAA sanctions on the Nittany Lions meant the school will effectively have nothing to play for over the next four years, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported. Richt told press at a UGA Day:  “Some colleges are going to be interested in some of their players, and we’re one of those schools. It’s pretty well-documented that we’re under our 85[-scholarship] limit. We’ll try to get in touch with some of these young men and see if they’re interested.” He added: “We do have some space available and if somebody fits a need and they’re excited about coming we would look into that possibility,” he said. “There may

Recruiting: Florida adds QB commitment

The University of Florida have added a commitment at quarterback for its 2013 class, Gatorsports.com reported on Monday. Three-star Quarterback Max Staver committed to Will Muschamp’s side, decided to go for Gainseville instead of Dan Mullen’s Mississippi State, who had also given him an offer. Staver, from Brentwood, Tennessee, is ranked the 14th player in the State and the 27th in the country amongst pro-style quarterbacks nationally. “I called them and they asked me if I was ready to be a Florida Gator, and I committed on the spot,” he told the website. Staver had also been shown interest from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, but none of the other schools had offered him yet.

Recruiting: Georgia adds Recruit No.19

Georgia has added its 19th recruit of the 2013 season: Rico Johnson. Johnson, out of Swainsboro, Georgia, accepted after being offered a place at Saturday’s Mark Richt camp, the AJC reported. He told the paper: “That was my dream school; I always wanted to go there,” he said. “I told myself if I ever got an offer from Georgia, that would be the school I would go to.” He isn’t listed in any of Rivals’ rankings after swapping high schools, the AJC said, but added Appalachian State and Marshall had both offered him scholarships. Thankfully, the ‘Big Dawgs’ came calling. The paper said that Johnson ‘dazzled’ during the camp, posting 4.25 and 4.28 40 yard dashes. The news provides some

Recruiting: Georgia loses five-star recruit

We normally don’t do de-commitments, but when it’s one of the nation’s top high school running backs, we’re happy to get some words in. Derrick Henry, formerly a commitment for the Georgia Bulldogs, decided Athens is not going to be his home after all. He said in a statement – covered by the AJC said: “This has been a great experience getting to know so many great coaches and visiting some of the best college football programs in the country. Even though I’ve worked really hard to put myself in this situation, I know I’m blessed to have this opportunity I’m very thankful for that. “For me personally, this is one of the biggest decisions I’ll make in my life and

Recruiting: Mississippi State gets three more commitments

Just when you thought it was safe to put away your cowbell, Mississippi State has just received three more major commitments – both on the attacking side of the ball. First of all, four-star running back Kailo Moore, who hails from Rosedale, Mississippi, opted to play for Dan Mullen’s 2013 class. Moore ran for nearly 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns for West Bolivar, and he’s got frightening speed. He’s Rivals’ No.12 running back in the nation, and the second in the state. To make matters worse for in-state rival Ole Miss, he originally committed to play for the Rebels, but decided to go to Starkville instead. He also received offers from Alabama and Vanderbilt- according to Rivals. “It feels good

Recruiting: Georgia grabs one recruit, loses another to USC

Georgia has beaten Georgia Tech to the commitment for 4-star linebacker Naim Mustafaa, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported. He told the AJC: “I made my decision about a week ago; I just had to come down to Georgia and tell them face to face. It just came down to where I wanted to be, really. Georgia Tech and Georgia are both great schools. I had to choose one.” Mustafaa is the son of seven-year NFL veteran Reggie Rutland, who played for Georgia Tech. However, Saturday was not all good news for Bulldogs fans. They had battled it out for in-state offensive linesman JP Vonashek with South Carolina, and ultimately lost the battle to their SEC rival. Vonashek told the AJC: “It

Recruiting: Atlanta media frets over Henry’s visit to Alabama

The Atlanta media is already fretting about Georgia recruiting, and it isn’t even football season yet. On the AJC’s website, the paper says: “Derrick Henry: Should UGA be worried about 5-star tailback visiting Alabama?” Henry, you remember, was seen as one of Georgia’s biggest recruiting coups when he plumped for the Bulldogs in July. But Alabama has four things in its favour. Firstly, the Tide have  just won a National Championship – its second in three years. Secondly, the school’s last two running backs were Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson – who ended up being quite good, by the way. We hear Eddie Lacy could be something special, too. Thirdly, they’ve got the best recruiter/ coach in the land in
