Tennessee starting DE, Fluker, Bray, Bumphis, 2 others named as receiving benefits

Tennessee defensive end Maurice Couch and four former SEC players have been named in a report as receiving illegal benefits during their time at schools. Alabama star DJ Fluker, Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray, Mississippi State wide receiver Chad Bumphis and defensive end Fletcher Cox, were named by a Yahoo! Sports report. The payments are said to come from former Tide star Luther Davis, the report said. “Yahoo Sports also found that three NFL agents and three financial advisers engaged Davis in transactions totaling $45,550. The three agents were Andy Simms, Peter Schaffer and John Phillips. The financial advisers were Jason Jernigan, Mike Rowan and Hodge Brahmbhatt“. Yahoo said that Simms, Schaffer, Rowan and Phillips confirmed the payments to Davis, but did

SEC Week 2: Power Rankings – Georgia rises, Florida falls

It was a weird and wild weekend in the SEC. Georgia and South Carolina played a classic that Georgia finally one (it’s been the opposite direction at Sanford between these two recently), Texas A&M struggled with mighty Sam Houston State in the first half of their game (mainly thanks to some terrible defense), LSU’s Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham were bringing the circus to ‘circus-like catches’ in Death Valley against UAB, and, er, Florida lost at Miami. Anyway, here are your SEC Power Rankings after Week 2. And yes, we know Alabama isn’t on top. 1) LSU (2-0): Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry were exceptional, and Zach Mettenberger’s looking comfortable in defense. In the proclaimed ‘run first’ offense, suddenly

SEC Week 2: Could Georgia lose to Carolina AGAIN?

Well, there’s no question what the biggest game in the SEC (and perhaps college football) this week is – and it again involves the Georgia Bulldogs. Last week the Dawgs lost the Game Of The Week at Clemson 38-35, and this week they’ve got to pick themselves off the proverbial tarmac and play South Carolina, home of one of their most hated rivals, one Steve Spurrier. In other games, there’s a Miami-Florida game, and Western Kentucky go for their second straight SEC victory with a win over Tenneseee. South Carolina at Georgia As mentioned, Georgia lost its first game of the season to Clemson 38-35 in a bruising encounter. In the process, it lost its top wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell,

AP Poll 1: Bama still No.1, Georgia out of Top 10

The AP Poll’s just come out, and there’s no surprises who is No.1: Alabama. The Crimson Tide are top of the polls after their win over Virginia Tech, however unconvincing it actually was. Georgia has plunged to 11 after its loss at Clemson, which in turn moved to No.4 in the nation. South Carolina stayed in 6th, Texas A&M’s 7th, LSU’s 9th, and Florida’s 12th.   Here’s the Top 25 for you: 1) Alabama (58) 2) Oregon – Apparently beating Nicholls State convincingly is better than beating Buffalo uncovincingly. 3) Ohio State (1) – See Oregon 4) Clemson (1) – Should be higher after beating Oregon. We’d have them at 1 or 2. 5) Stanford – Stanford! It’s YOUR fault

Week 1 SEC Power Rankings: Geaux up top, Johnny Football falls

Right, here are your SEC power rankings. In this power rankings, we’re not going on who we think are the best teams in the SEC UNTIL THE GAMES ARE PLAYED, so Tennessee’s not going to go to No.1 because they shelled Austin Peay, and nor is Alabama because they beat up on an injured Virginia Tech. And Georgia’s not going to the bottom because they had a ‘L’. So here we go: 1) LSU: The Tigers put up 448 yards and 37 points on a dangerous TCU side. Zach Mettenberger looked a lot better than last year. And Jarvis Landry – if he continues to catch like he did on Saturday night – should be in the shout for the

How did we do? SEC Round-Up for Week 1

The SEC’s first week was a fun week for our conference. The Georgia-Clemson game lived up to predictions. Zach Mettenberger looked like a quarterback. Alabama looked like an Alabama side that needs to blow away some cobwebs. There’s hope again in Auburn and Tennessee. And Kentucky has some work to do. SO WHAT DO WE KNOW? We know that Georgia’s best wide receiver managed to injure himself after celebrating the Bulldogs’ opening touchdown against Clemson. He’s out for the year. Now that’s bad luck, Dawgs. We know that Kirk Herbstreit predicted Toledo would beat Florida. He was wrong. Florida’s ‘D’ is still NASTY, folks. We know that EVERYONE was talking about a Heisman Trophy-winning performance from Jadeveon Clowney Week 1.

Thursday Round-Up: Ole Miss vs Vandy play in classic, unlike Clowney

So, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt served up a classic for any college football fan (like they did LAST SEASON, actually), while Jadeveon Clowney proved why he’s…..oh wait a minute, he didn’t. But South Carolina rolled North Carolina 27-10 to keep Vegas happy. So, here are the headlines: 1) Clowney Calamity? If we could go to jail for ‘after the fact irresponsible advertising’, then we probably would have the cops knocking on our door after wanting to re-name Thursday ‘Clowney Day’ to celebrate the return of college football to our TV screens and stadiums. The South Carolina behemoth struggled for most of the game against North Carolina – especially during the Tar Heel’s hurry-up offense. He looked beat repeatedly, and we

No Clowning Around on Clowney Day? SEC Predictions Week 1

Wow. So this is it. It’s the start of the 2013 college football season today, and this is a wonderful thing. In fact, I’m in tears of excitement just thinking about it. Anyways, here are our SEC Predictions THURSDAY North Carolina at South Carolina South Carolina’s defensive superstar and potential NFL No.1 pick Jadeveon Clowney is getting re-unleashed on the world against a North Carolina offence trying to pick its offensive line back up. South Carolina have to replace running back Marcus Lattimore but quarterback Connor Shaw is more than capable of winning the game – especially when’s it at home at a very, very loud Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina is a 12 ½-point favourite against a team that on

Three-peat for ‘Bama? 2013 Alabama College Football Preview

Is there ever going to be a year that Alabama will NOT be the favorite, or one of the favorites, for a national title? Well, after 2012, when Alabama waltzed home with its second straight National Championship, we’ll answer that: Probably not. Nick Saban’s the country’s best coach. Nick Saban’s one of the country’s best recruiters. All Nick Saban does (unless you’re referring to his NFL career) is win. His team brings back their starting quarterback who just knows how to win, and an exceptional wide receiver who doesn’t drop anything. Their running back stable is the best in the country. And their defence is frighteningly good. But will he get his third straight National Championship? A lot of people
