From Muschamp to Miles to Mullen: Which SEC head coach is on the hottest seat?

It’s that time of the year when people talk. They talk about recruits. They talk about titles. And they talk about whether head coaches are going to get booted at the end of the season. Did Will Muschamp save his job by beating Georgia decisively at the Cocktail Party? Did Georgia’s Mark Richt endanger by losing the same game? Has Texas A&M’s run of form endangered Kevin Sumlin’s? Anyway, here you go with our SEC Head Coaches On The Hot Seat. Note that the lower you get, it slowly becomes very unlikely indeed. 1) Will Muschamp (Florida) — Despite beating Georgia so decisively, Will Muschamp’s reign has been pretty horrible in Florida (26-19) – especially if you compare it to

2014 SEC Preview: Ole Miss, by damn?

Ole Miss has always been a pretty interesting school. It’s got one of the best tailgates in College Football (although opposing fans insist The Grove’s like a cocktail party you’re not invited to). It’s got ‘The Blind Side’. It’s got previous history we don’t want to go into. And right now, it’s got energy with head coach Hugh Freeze recruiting like a God. But don’t get us wrong – if Freeze loses two straight to Dan Mullen and Mississippi State, he won’t be popular in Oxford… LAST SEASON The end-of-season, 2-overtime loss to Mississippi State stands out as probably the worst loss of Ole Miss’ season, considering they stood out early on with a heart-attack victory at Vanderbilt, a stunning

SEC Media Days: Our Quick Coaches’ Press Conference Awards

Now the SEC Media Days are in the book, we’re giving 14 awards to our head coaches’ press conferences. Our award for “Most God-Like” is easy, though. It’s to Commissioner Mike Slive, because he’s God, Ali and The President and you aren’t. So without further ado: STRANGEST PRESS CONFERENCE: Les Miles (LSU) – I mean, who in the hell goes on vacation in Austin, talks about the weather a lot, then declines to mention anything about the strangest thing that happened to him in all of 2013 – the fact that he let his team vote on whether to keep a running back who punched somebody, instead of simply booting him? Or was this just Les being Les?  MOST MALCOLM GLADWELL-LIKE

Hugh Freeze: Ole Miss not yet a total SEC team

Hugh Freeze came into the SEC Media Days a pretty happy guy. His Ole Miss team was coming off monster wins (for the program, at least) against Texas and LSU, as well as a bowl victory. He’s recruited strongly – even in the face of Alabama. He started off his press conference with a somewhat sharp word for another SEC rival: “One good thing about Media Days is Coach Spurrier isn’t talking about Ole Miss as much, wanting to play us every year.  Maybe that’s a good thing“, referencing Spurrier’s comments from 2012 about schedules where he said: “If I made the schedule, Georgia’d be playing LSU and we’d be playing Ole Miss.” But still, he told the assembled media

Ole Miss senior DB arrested

Ole Miss senior defensive back Senquez Golson was arrested on Sunday on a charge of disorderly conduct, reports have said. “The officer was in the midst of a call and he encountered Golson,” Cooksey said. “He attempted to identify him, but he didn’t have any identification on him and he wouldn’t give information.” Golson was a ten-game starter for Ole Miss at cornerback, and he had 2 INTs  and 3 pass break-ups. Golson was taken to the Adult Detention Center in Pascagoula, where he was later released on $1,000 bond through AD Bonding.

Other SEC coaches talk on the FCS scheduling issue

Other SEC head coaches than Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp have spoken on the scheduling issue. This is what they had to say. Nick Saban (Alabama): “I don’t know that we have a choice sometimes. We can’t just call people up and say, ‘We want to have a game.’ It’s not like setting up a golf game. I call up three of my buddies and say you guys want to play and you play Sunday morning. Then everybody says, ‘Yeah, I can play.’ You ever try to schedule a game? Do you know (what) goes into that? It’s very difficult to do home-and-home with quality teams. To be honest with you, you almost have to buy games to get people

‘Saban Rule’ to be reconsidered

The controversial ‘Saban Rule’ which would ensure that would delay offenses and effectively blindside the quick snap tactics is to be re-considered, USA Today has reported. The rule, which would ensure that offenses had to give defenses 10 seconds between snaps (apparently because of ‘safety reasons’, according to Alabama Coach Nick Saban), is apparently going to be reconsidered by the NCAA Rule Committee next week….even before it comes before a vote. The reason for the rule in the first place is worries that more players would be injured as offenses speed up and they are unable to take breaks. Saban and Bielema had lobbied for this since June, according to a piece by Saturday Down South at the time. “I

Ole Miss stars in $2m lawsuit

Ole Miss stars Denzel and Robert Nkemdiche have been slapped with a $2m lawsuit over the assault of a university frat boy at a party on February 17th last year, according to a report from Fox Sports College Football Blog ‘Outside The Lines’. According to a civil complaint the two brothers (Robert was one of the biggest recruits in high school at the time and had only just signed to Ole Miss) and five other Ole Miss players attacked Matthew Baird and later Ford Everett at a KA Party. This is the second piece of bad news in quick succession for Denzel Nkemdiche, who was arrested for disturbing the peace on Saturday night. Fellow linebacker Serderius Bryant was also arrested,

Ole Miss: The country’s most bizarre National Signing Day

After a tremendous 2013 National Signing Day, it would have taken Godlike qualities (and a Nick Saban resignation) to have propelled Hugh Freeze to those heights. Instead, the Ole Miss coach continued with another tremendous National Signing Day, solidifying his offensive line with a bunch of offensive linesmen, including four-starrer Rod Taylor, as well as Tyler Putman, and Jordan Sims. They’ll join JUCO O-Lineman Fahn Cooper, who enrolled early. Defensively, Freeze got JUCO DB Tee Shepard, who had previously committed to Notre Dame and Mississippi State, before he decided to play in Oxford at the last minute. Shepard had said that he would be playing his sophomore year in a community college. Did that all change? We don’t really know. Speaking

14 Last Minute SEC Head Coach Recruiting Pitches Before National Signing Day

Right, so National Signing Day’s tomorrow, which means that it’s Christmas for anyone who loves seeing if their school’s signing up some good talent. Why haven’t we gone more crazy on the recruiting front? It’s easy. I could get excited about a recruit, only for him to de-commit 400 times before making a decision, so I’d rather wait until National Signing Day. And then go crazy folks. Which I will do. Somewhere in the SEC, our head coaches are calling, texting, FBing and sexting recruits (OK, maybe not the last) in an effort to get them to come and play for their schools. As a unit, it’s worked: 80 commitments will be to SEC schools on Wednesday. But there’s still
