Penn State: Richt looking at Penn State LB

Mark Richt has admitted that Georgia is already looking at Penn State players after NCAA sanctions on the Nittany Lions meant the school will effectively have nothing to play for over the next four years, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported. Richt told press at a UGA Day:  “Some colleges are going to be interested in some of their players, and we’re one of those schools. It’s pretty well-documented that we’re under our 85[-scholarship] limit. We’ll try to get in touch with some of these young men and see if they’re interested.” He added: “We do have some space available and if somebody fits a need and they’re excited about coming we would look into that possibility,” he said. “There may

Quick reflection on SEC Media Days: Why didn’t people mention soft scheduling?

This is going to sound really nasty bearing in mind that this is a blog on the SEC and the fact that we are read by SEC fans, but we’ve been looking for the ‘juiciest’ (trust me, there aren’t very many) quotes from the SEC Media Days, and we struggled to get anything that kept us particularly awake. However, like the ghost that haunts us and never seems to give up, we couldn’t help but think: Why on earth did NO-ONE ask either Commissioner Slive or any of the SEC head coaches about Non-Conference scheduling? Here is why: When the 2014 play-offs come along and the Committee -whoever they might be – are deciding ‘strength of schedule’, they hopefully will

SEC Media Days: Mark Richt’s best quotes

Mark Richt met with journalists at the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Al. ESPN reported that he said: “No decision to dismiss a guy from the team is an easy decision. It’s always tough because I care very much about all these guys and having to make those kinds of decisions are tough. But in the end, I think we did what’s in the best interest of the program and I really do wish Isaiah the very best in his future. Hopefully things work out for him.” Otherwise, here are some of his other quotes, provided by the SEC. Defending a poor non-conference schedule: “A few years back when the extra game was added, we had the philosophy of adding another

EXCLUSIVE: Could another UGA star de-commit after shock transfer decision?

Four-star Georgia recruit Brandon Kublanow has told The SEC Football Blog that he’s now uncertain as to whether he will be a Bulldog in 2013 after Mark Richt announced that linebacker / defensive end Brandon Burrows was to transfer. Marietta, Ga.-based Kublanow – who is ranked as one of Rivals top 150 players in the nation – and the second-best centre in Georgia tweeted after the news that Burrows was leaving: “Disappointed Brandon is leaving the team, really wanted to play with him, he’s like a bro”. When asked by The SEC Football Blog if this was going to his own decision to go to UGA, he replied: “idk”, which is known to mean ‘I Don’t Know’. And it’s not as

UGA linebacker to transfer

UGA linebacker Brandon Burrows has been granted an unconditional transfer, the University of Georgia has said. Mark Richt, Georgia’s coach said: “Brandon is an outstanding person, student-athlete and has a wonderful family. We’ve enjoyed having him as part of our program and will provide whatever assistance we can in his transition. I am completely understanding of his decision and wish him nothing but the best.” Burrows’ statement said: “I came out of high school playing the defensive end position in a 4-3 defense which is what I truly love. The coaching change here led to a 3-4 defense. I have worked with that transition but decided that I want to get back to playing defensive end. I think another program may give

Georgia looking for life after Crowell – and vice versa

After dismissing Isaiah Crowell on Saturday after their troubled star’s arrest on gun charges, Georgia will be needing another running back to frighten the life out of SEC East defenses in the fall. The job up for grabs will come between sophomore Ken Malcolme, highly-touted Keith Marshall, and freshman Todd Gurley, ESPN says. And as for Crowell, here are some schools where we think Crowell might end up: 1) Auburn – Remember what happened when Florida dismissed Cam Newton? We can bet that some parts of The Swamp were thinking: “Why was Urban Meyer so draconian?” Stealing computers will do that to do. Tigers fans? They’re pretty happy with the National Title. Plus, with Michael Dyer leaving, Auburn suddenly needs

Arrests: UGA running back star arrested

Georgia running back star Isaiah Crowell has been arrested, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer has revealed. The star Bulldogs running back is in jail facing three weapons charges after Athens police stopping Crowell’s car found a weapon under his seat with an altered serial number. There was also the ‘odor of marijuana’, although no drugs were found. “Crowell was arrested on charges of carrying a weapon in a school zone, and having an altered ID mark, both felonies”, the paper said. The arrest will immediately trigger an indefinite suspension from bound-to-be-furious Georgia coach Mark Richt, and it has been speculated that Crowell could be kicked off the team. He is currently in jail with a $7,500 bail on his head.

Uniwatch: On The New Georgia Helmets

Sorry guys, not a big fan of the new UGA helmets. Yes, we respect Georgia’s country fanbase, but puhleeze – we much prefer the classic red ones as it has been since time and memorial. If they ARE going to change it, why don’t they simply change to a black helmet for the ‘black out’ and nothing more, nothing less? What do you think?

Recruiting: Georgia adds Recruit No.19

Georgia has added its 19th recruit of the 2013 season: Rico Johnson. Johnson, out of Swainsboro, Georgia, accepted after being offered a place at Saturday’s Mark Richt camp, the AJC reported. He told the paper: “That was my dream school; I always wanted to go there,” he said. “I told myself if I ever got an offer from Georgia, that would be the school I would go to.” He isn’t listed in any of Rivals’ rankings after swapping high schools, the AJC said, but added Appalachian State and Marshall had both offered him scholarships. Thankfully, the ‘Big Dawgs’ came calling. The paper said that Johnson ‘dazzled’ during the camp, posting 4.25 and 4.28 40 yard dashes. The news provides some
