Week 7 preview: Can Tennessee upset Alabama?

Ladies and gentlemen, Saturday’s gonna be a war. Alabama going to visit an off-the-hook Neyland Stadium to face the mountain folk of Tennessee. No, we don’t know if Bryce Young’s playing, but we do know that Josh Heupel’s team is playing very, very well and this is going to be a fun game. Oh, and then there’s the usual madness of a LSU-Florida game with both sides continually failing to get out of their own way, a ranked match-up between Mississippi State and Kentucky, a fascinating non-conference match-up as Arkansas walk into Mormon Central to play BYU, as well as the continuing soap opera at Auburn with the Tigers go to Ole Miss to play what many feel is an

Week 6 Preview: The big game’s in Death Valley, actually

I got in an argument after I posting a quick 1-14 SEC ranking on my Twitter page in which I ranked Georgia as third, with Tennessee on top and Alabama as second. Anyway, Week 5 is finished now. Sorry to have not done my ratings, but in between looking after a toddler and having one of the worst laptop chargers in Christendom, Week 6 has caught up with me way too quickly. Anyway: Week 6 is going to be fun, isn’t it? CBS thought they had hit the jackpot by scheduling their only night game between Alabama and Texas A&M before the season. And then Texas A&M became really, really poor, and Alabama’s a 24 point favourite, and if Saban’s

Week 4 SEC rankings: Tennessee’s our No.1

This season, I have been consistently hit by the fact that Tennessee should be ranked as the No.1 team in the SEC, and maybe the No.2 team in the country. It’s not because of the Josh Heupel offense or because I’ve automatically decided that orange is my favorite colour – it’s because Tennessee has beaten two ranked sides, and Alabama and Georgia has only beaten one. There is no ‘common opponent’ between Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. There will be when the Vols play both teams, but right now, the Vols have had the harder of all three schedules. Each have played SEC teams. Georgia and Alabama destroyed South Carolina and Vanderbilt respectively, but Tennessee beat a better opponent in Florida.

Week 2 Ratings: Texas A&M leads the headlines (and not in a good way)

Although everyone was focussed about a little game in Austin pitching two of the most hated superpowers in College Football against each other, the biggest result against happened in (relative) far away College Station, when Texas A&M was defeated 17-14 by Appalachian State, capping off a wonderful weekend for the Sun Belt. Elsewhere, Kentucky surprised Florida and made AR looking ordinary, KJ Jefferson led Arkansas to a convincing win over South Carolina and Missouri was kerb-stomped by Kansas State. Most of the other games went to form. Personally speaking, our big whiff was predicting a Vanderbilt win over Wake Forest. We didn’t think Sam Hartman would be back for the Demon Deacons. And boy, were we wrong. WHO WERE WE

The SEC Future: How a 3-6 schedule would work

Everyone talked about the new SEC schedule. Regardless of what Greg Sankey would love to say, the SEC is going to follow the Pac-12 – (and Big 12 a few years before that, incidentally), and go for a system where the best two team in the SEC play each other in the SEC Championship Game. And that system would be 9 games, and not 8. One thing’s that’s not going to happen is the ‘1-8 schedule’ (1 permanent rival, and 7 revolving rivals), because that will mean that a lot of key TV assets won’t play each other, not to mention Georgia v Auburn, or Alabama v LSU, and Texas v Texas A&M. There are some people who like the

SEC vs SEC: National Championship Preview

The problem with watching two teams that already played each other about a month ago is that mentally, you’re prepared for a dull slog. And however much Atlanta might dress it up to be otherwise, that’s what it feels like. So on Monday night – when Georgia faces Alabama in a replay of last month’s SEC Championship Game, it’s going to be difficult to get excited. Especially if you’re an Auburn fan, who’s confused about which team they want to fail MORE. Georgia’s a three-point favorite in Vegas, by the way. SO WHAT DO ALABAMA HAVE TO DO TO WIN ‘SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NO.2’?   Play better on the offensive line: Alabama’s offensive line performance against Cincinnati was honestly pretty

College Football Semi-Final Previews: Bama vs Cincy/Georgia vs Michigan

Alabama host Ole Miss this week

I’ve got an 11-month old who’s sole aim (between teething) is to exhaust me. I’m sorry for not getting previews out there for all the bowls, but Christmas + child + wife who’s a pastor = Literal Hell on Earth. But saying that, I have been granted some time by the Lord Jesus to preview the two college football semi-final games, which I can’t believe are happening tomorrow. I truly thought the games were next week or something (Christmas screwing my dates up, yo!). ALABAMA (-13 1/2, O/U 57 1/2) VS CINCINNATI No-one seems to think Cincinnati’s got a cat in hell’s chance of winning this one. After Alabama overcame Georgia in a brilliant performance in the SEC Championship Game,
