Previewing all Power-4 Conference Championships

As we said recently, our take on Conference Championships this year is that they don’t matter. It’s not a way of teams ‘settling it on the field’, it’s a money-grab by the conferences. That’s not to say that the winners won’t be over-the-moon and the losers won’t feel the pain of defeat, but there’s not as much skin in the game. And in the SEC Championship Game and B1G Championship Games, which feature Georgia-Texas and Oregon-Penn State, this is particularly the case. All teams play the games extra close, then the Top 4 won’t change. On the other side, it’s jeopardy on steroids in the Big 12 and ACC Championship games though. The loser of the ACC (SMU and Clemson)

The SEC/Big Ten meeting was a joke

OK, so amid all the excitement about the Red River Shoot-Out, one bit of news should stick in the noggin, because to be quite frank, it’s far more important. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti met with each other as part of the joint advisory group they’d set up in February – careful to bring the lawyers with them just in case every other conference thought it might be collusion. In part of his statement that you can only assume was – to use a British term – utter shite, Sankey said that he often talks to the ACC and Big 12 on the phone, but somehow can’t seem to get everyone together. “We talk regularly with

Georgia leads AP Top 25 preseason poll

In unsurprising news, the Associated Press’ preseason Top 25 is led by Georgia, ahead of Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU. USC, Penn State, Florida State, Clemson and Washington round out the Top 10. In all, there are 6 SEC, 5 Pac-12, 5 B1G, 4 Big 12, 3 ACC as well as Notre Dame, and, er, Tulane. In a bigger statement, Yahoo Sports pointed out that all of the Top 7 will be in the SEC or B1G next year. Surprisingly, Texas is the top team in the Big 12 at 11. We thought they’d be higher. Here is the complete list. 1. Georgia 2. Michigan 3. Ohio State 4. Alabama 5. LSU 6. USC 7. Penn State 8.

NFL Draft Day 1: Go to Georgia and Alabama, make money.

“If you want to go and make a crap ton of money in the NFL, come to our school.” That’s been the pitch of Nick Saban and Kirby Smart to high schoolers since the dawn of time, and once again, it’s worked. Alabama had No.1 in Bryce Young (Panthers), No.3 in Will Anderson (Texans) and No.12 in Jahmyr Gibbs (Lions), while Georgia’s defense from the 2022 title run continued to roll, with No.9 DT Jalen Carter (Eagles), No.14 OT Broderick Jones (Steelers) and No.30 DE Nolan Smith (Eagles). The SEC surprisingly didn’t lead the amount of first round talent going on stage this year, with the B1G sending 10 players into Roger Goodell’s arms. The Big 12 had 6, the

Rivalry Week: SEC game predictions (plus the other one!)

Before we talk about SEC rivalries, let’s think about the one that’s not going to be played this week: Virginia and Virginia Tech. It’s not because of COVID-19. It’s not because of food poisoning through both camps that means both teams can’t field players. It’s because a nasty piece of work shot three of his former teammates dead and the team can’t do anything but mourn. It doesn’t make me want to give thoughts and prayers, it makes me want to give thoughts and get ****ing angry. Less importantly that my previous paragraph, it’s Rivalry Week in College Football – but in particular, the SEC. There’s battles for Irons, Palmettos, Eggs, jorts and even ****ing Commonwealths. It’s nasty, it’s angry,

USC and UCLA make a B1G move: What does it mean for the SEC?

USC and UCLA managed to usurp the SEC on ‘crap we never saw coming’, when the Trojans and Bruins leaked the news – and then confirmed it – that they were both moving to the B1G in the 2024-25 season.  Although the geography’s a joke, it means that there will be two more college sports superpowers arriving to the Big Ten. For USC, it’s no argument that they are a college football superpower. They’ve been as much of a running joke as Texas has in recent years, but the Trojans won back-to-back Nattys in 2004 and 2005, and should were a Vince Young whisker from winning one in 2006. Oh, and overall they’ve won – or been voted as –

National Championship Preview: Alabama vs Ohio State

Since we last wrote this, here’s some news: Alabama is going to play in the National Championship against Ohio State (more about that later). Crimson Tide WR DeVonta Smith won the Heisman. Speaking of Auburn, the Tigers just hired Bryan Harsin to be their head coach. Former South Carolina OC Mike Bobo will be new OC, and former Vanderbilt HC Derek Mason will be the new DC. Speaking of Vanderbilt, the Commodores hired Notre Dame DC Clark Lea to be their head coach.d Texas is hiring Alabama’s OC Steve Sarkasian to be its head coach. The SEC went 6-2 in their bowl games, with only Auburn and Florida losing their games. Florida HC Dan Mullen is reportedly trying to sell

How do you keep players ‘in the bubble’?

Right, so keeping players in the bubble’s going to be tough. It’s pretty obvious that the kids who are going back to school think that just because they passed a COVID test between March and now that they aren’t ever gonna get the plague, so they are gonna hang out, drink and do dumb stuff, because they are students. Football players aren’t different, particularly with all the distractions. And no, we ain’t talking about studies, since a lot of college football players wouldn’t be in college if it wasn’t for football. Hell, it’s a miracle most of them got through high school. A great friend of mine was pursuing the sort of lifestyle that would have made Hunter S Thompson proud

SEC, ACC: No plans to scrap college football

The SEC and ACC have both said that they have no plans to quash their college football plans after the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences said that they are cancelling fall football. B SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement: “I look forward to learning more about the factors that led the Big Ten and Pac-12 leadership to take these actions today. I remain comfortable with the thorough and deliberate approach that the SEC and our 14 members are taking to support a healthy environment for our student-athletes. We will continue to further refine our policies and protocols for a safe return to sports as we monitor developments around COVID-19 in a continued effort to support, educate and care

Alabama leads NFL Combine invite list

National Signing Day was Wednesday. And now NFL Combine Invite List Day is Thursday. OK, so we made up the ‘NFL Combine Invite List Day’, but today the NFL really did release breakdown of how many people had been invited to the Combine, which runs from February 19-25 in Indianapolis. The SEC had 71 players invited, smashing the second-placed ACC with 48. The Pac-12 had 45, Big Ten 36, Big 12 had 25. Every team in the SEC had at least one player invited. Eight SEC schools had at least eight. Alabama had 12 players invited, LSU had 11, Florida had 8 and Missouri had 7. Position-wise, SEC had 28 offensive and defensive linesmen invited to the combine, dwarfing B1G’s
