Florida turnaround not going to happen ‘overnight’ – McElwain

The turnaround of the Florida Gators isn’t going to happen overnight, new coach Jim McElwain has said. McElwain, who came from Colorado State after head coach Will Muschamp was ousted from Gainseville after an awful 2014 (led by an horrific offense), said at the SEC Media Days: “I think part of the experience of being in this conference is realizing it doesn’t happen just overnight,” he said. He was full of praise of standout corner Vernon Hargreaves, who could well be a Top 5 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft: “I love the way this guy comes to work every day. The way he practices, the way he thrives in competition, and not only that, the way he takes care

Auburn to get All-SEC blocker back

Auburn is to get All-SEC offensive linesman Alex Kozan back for the start of the 2015 season, Gus Malzahn said at SEC Media Days. Kozan missed the whole of last year after herniating a disk in his back, but has returned for non-contact drills and was cleared to return for the start of the season although still isn’t in full shape. “He’s a tough guy coming back,” Malzahn said.

‘Will Muschamp is the best defensive mind in football’ – Gus Malzahn

According to Gus Malzahn, Auburn’s move to get Will Muschamp was an exceptionally positive one. “Defensively in the offseason, we hired Will Muschamp, in my opinion, the best defensive mind in all of football, not just college football,” he said at the SEC Media Days. “Our defensive players have taken on his personality, which I really like.” He added: ” He just has that presence around him that he gives all the coaches confidence. He gives his players confidence. And he’s got the it factor. So we’re very blessed to combine his defense with an offense that we’ve been running. We think the future’s very bright.” Muschamp’s Florida team last year defensively was one of the best in college football, only

SEC Media Days: What We’re Expecting (SEC East)

On Tuesday we told you what we’re expecting from SEC West coaches on the schedule. It should be a lot of talk about the schedule, quarterbacking and good running backs. Of course, we’d love them to talk about LSU and Alabama’s penchant for getting people arrested, shitty defensive co-ordinators, and their hot wives/daughters/do-nothing husbands-in-law, but it’s probably not going to happen. Anyway, this time it’s time for your SEC East coaches. FLORIDA What Jim McElwain will probably get asked: How he’s settling into the job (“I love it down here. It’s a change from the Rockies”), how he plans to change the offense (“Don’t expect miracles, but we should be better than last year”); How tough the SEC’s schedule is (“We’re

SEC Media Days: What We’re Expecting (SEC West)

The SEC Media Days (July 13-16) don’t generally have a whole lot, yet they are still entertaining. Maybe it’s because Steve Spurrier is always guaranteed the good one-liner, maybe it’s because Nick Saban’s always whining about something that’s wrong with college football,  or maybe it’s because we’re all waiting for Les Miles to kiss one of his players on the mouth. Here’s what we think each school’s going to get asked about…..and what they SHOULD get asked about…. ALABAMA What they will ask Nick Saban: The evil schedule (The quotes that will get spouted will be: “We play in the toughest conference in the land”), the QB situation and who’s going to start (“We don’t, they are all good candidates”), how

Top Ten Things We Love About The SEC

We love America. We love America so we’ll be celebrating by joining our buddies drinking beer and hanging out and celebrating our wonderful country. We probably won’t go in the water by the beach, because if that 30-person flotilla’s anything to go by,  it’ll be a sewage dump come about 6pm. Anyway, we love America, and we love the SEC. So here’s Top 10 things we love about the SEC. Happy Reading. 1) Our stadiums Cool names, cool looks, and hedges. What could we want more? We love our stadiums at night more than we love them during the day, because the atmosphere’s something special. From the well-known (The Swamp) to the slightly-less-but-still-deafening-at-night (South Carolina’s Williams Brice) to the cool city

Auburn vs Oregon: We can’t wait!!

OK, so we might hate the idea of one-off non-conference games during the regular season, but we have to be honest, the confirmation that Auburn’s going to play Oregon in 2019 at JerryWorld is INCREDIBLE. WE. CAN’T. WAIT. Of course, we would have preferred a home-and-home. And so would Oregon season ticket holders (Eugene’s a 32 hour drive from Dallas). And possibly Auburn season ticket holders (10 hrs, 52 mins). But the TV companies? Definitely not. The conferences? Definitely not. This is a top echelon conference showcase between two superpowers. And the schools? It’s going to be a nice payday, thanks very much. And if they win, their chances of going to the play-off (which might be up to 8

Quinnen Williams: Alabama over Auburn

Four-star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams has decided to go to Alabama instead of Auburn. The 6-4, 265lb star from Wenonah School in Birmingham, AL had committed to Auburn before de-committing from The Plains on June 5th without reason and looking over his options. AL.com noted that Williams was Auburn’s third decommittment of the year. ESPN Scout said about the player: “Williams is a defensive line prospect with very good overall size and outstanding playing strength with a frame that can continue to be developed and support more good mass with time in Alabama’s weight program. The ESPN 300 defensive lineman can use that combination of size and strength to be a physical and stout run defender.” He was also described

20 Things To Do During The SEC Summer

I miss my SEC Football. I miss my falls. I miss the summer. Everything’s going far too slowly. Hands up if you can’t do another Saturday wedding. Hands up if you’re constantly checking the calendar and counting down to the first weekend of the college football season, and praying that God will bring it over at the speed of a Texas lightning storm. Anyway, while you’re waiting, here’s 20 SEC-ish things to do during the dog days of summer…. 1. Check up on recruiting It’s something to get excited about. And if your team loses on a recruit, you can be

Vandy rape case declared mistrial

The Vanderbilt rape case has been declared a mistrial. The case was thrown out because the jury foreman did not admit that he was once the victim of a sexual assault. Corey Batey and Brandon Vandenburg had both been accused of crimes of aggravated rape and sexual battery, and were found guilty five months ago on five counts of the former and two counts of the latter. According to CBS, both players had been waiting sentencing before the revelations took place, which might mean that they avoid decades of jail-time. The trial, CBS noted, “featured graphic video and photographic evidence showing the unconscious female student being violated in the dorm room“, accusing the players of owning that footage.
