The SEC Rankings after Crap Saturday don’t change very much

The best thing about Crap Saturday is that that weekend ends all the weekends of crap games, and it’s one week before our favorite long weekend of the year: Rivalry Week. But we’ll get onto Rivalry Week tomorrow, once we’ve basked in the glory of last Saturday’s incredible SEC schedule, which saw zero upsets, one close, fun game and….er…. (in other non-SEC news) Baker Mayfield grabbed his crotch at some Kansans, and then wrote his usual apology. So here’s your SEC rankings from 1-14. Alabama: Heroically beat Mercer to preserve unbeaten season. Games like the Mercer vs Alabama is why we love SEC Football. Auburn: Struggled early against Louisiana-Monroe, but eventually hit the gear they were looking for. They could

Starting Georgia LB arrested

Stop if you’ve heard this before: A starting Georgia player was arrested on Thursday night. This time it was Natrez Patrick, who is tied for third on the team in tackles, who was arrested on misdemeanour marijuana-related charges (meaning he had less than an ounce on him when Athens PD arrested him). It wasn’t the first time Patrick had been arrested. He’d also been arrested with former Dawg Chauncey Rivers in 2015, ESPN pointed out. In the Mark Richt days, this would have spelt the end of Patrick’s career with the Bulldogs, although we think that Kirby Smart’s going to go for the Nick Saban approach of second/third charges. We expect Patrick to be out for four games, which includes the

Week 3 SEC Preview: Vols-Gators, MSU-LSU

With the destruction of Hurricane Irma still lingering over the State of Florida, there will be a lot of positive sentiment flowing towards the Florida Gators in Week 3. Can they back it up with a good offensive performance against Tennessee? The SEC Football Blog previews that game and all the others involving SEC teams in our Week 3 preview…. No.23 Tennessee vs No.24 Florida (-5.5): From 2005 to 2016, Tennessee-Florida was hardly a rivalry. Florida won 11 in a row. Sure, 2014 and 2015 had been squeakers, but it just didn’t look as though UT would beat the Gators. Then 2016 happened, and Tennessee romped to a 10-point victory. Suddenly, after Florida fell apart against Michigan on Week 1 (sadly, it’s

Star Alabama player arrested

Star Alabama linebacker Tim Williams was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning for the possession of carrying a pistol without a permit. The charge is only a misdemeanour, so if he is suspended, it’s likely that Saban will suspend him for the clash against Kentucky on Saturday. What might get Williams in more trouble was what attracted police to the car in the first place: The smell of marijuana. Although Williams explained that the marjuana was his own, it will be interesting to see if Saban’s line when he talks to the media will pro-pot legalization, or against it. It’s not terrible news for the program, but it’s may well be an expensive one for Williams, who will

The SEC would love to have Week 1 back

Right, we here at the SEC would like to have Week 1 back. Sure, some of the schools are 1-0 and some are not, but none of our teams were particularly great, and some of them – even in victory – couldn’t seem to get their collective asses off the ground. Anyway, here’s ranking how every team in the conference did this week, in order of performance: Alabama (win vs USC)- The Alabama fans were ready to lynch Lane Kiffin, right until the USC QB threw a pick-6 and the Crimson Tide to shreds. It wasn’t a complete performance, but if this was considered as a bad performance after Week One, then the rest of college football is in trouble.

Quick SEC Preview: The Players To Watch

The quick SEC Preview with the SEC Players to Watch (and we’re also going for the Top 10 outside the conference too). SEC PLAYERS Leonard Fournette (LSU) – The best running back in college football? Stopped against Alabama last season, but put a struggling offence on his back and was phenomenal all season long. Can’t wait for how things will be this year. Nick Chubb (Georgia) – IF Chubb’s not injured, this is one of the most dangerous running backs in the SEC. Apparently he’s ready for the opener against North Carolina. We just heard a big gulp from UNC fans.  Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Unblockable. 11-1/2 sacks last year and 59 tackles. Josh Dobbs (Tennessee) – He’s a frightening

Knoxville Police called Jones about rape investigations

A report from The Tennessean seems to show that police informed Tennessee coach Butch Jones that two of his players – AJ Johnson and Michael Williams – were being investigated for the rape of a female student. Both Johnson and Williams were later charged. The paper said: “The players first heard the news from their Tennessee football coaches — in Johnson’s case, four hours before police showed up at the scene of the alleged crime to question him“, quoting sources. According to the report, Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch and another detective called Jones out of professional courtesy. Rausch has said that such a call in commonplace at Tennessee when there has been a potential crime involving an athlete, but

Georgia players arrested and jailed for firing gun

Two freshmen Georgia players have been arrested and jailed for firing a BB gun on school property, according to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Defensive tackle Julian Rochester and Chad Clay were arrested and jailed for having the gun on school property, and second degree damage. They were still in jail at the time of writing, the AJC said, as there is no bond for possessing a weapon – albeit a BB gun. Kirby Smart, Georgia’s new head coach, said in a statement: “I’m disappointed with the poor judgment of Julian and Chad. We expect full compliance with the policies of the University and of our football program from all our student-athletes. Information is still being gathered but they will be disciplined

Former Vandy player found guilty of rape

Former Vanderbilt player Corey Batey was found guilty of the aggravated rape of a woman late on Friday night. Batey had been convicted of the rape – which happened in 2013 – in an initial trial in 2015, but the decision was overturned and he was tried again this year. He was found guilty once again this year, and immediately taken into custody. His teammate – Brandon Vandenburg – who also had his guilty conviction turned over in 2015 – will be re-tried in June. Two others – Brandon Banks and Tip McKenzie – have all been charged but it is not known when they will be tried, the Tennessean says. All four players were booted from the Vanderbilt team when
