2021 SEASON PREVIEW: Georgia’s building itself into a 2021 favorite

If I’m a betting man, I make Georgia the favorite to win the SEC. Yes, there is the injury to George Pickens, its best wide receiver. OFFENSE But the Bulldogs have the most talented QB in the SEC (in experience, anyway) in JT Daniels, they still have a dynamite WR combo in Kearis Jackson and Jermaine Burton, and a filthy running back in Zamir White. The offensive line’s as stacked as you can get….and there are five-stars all over the field. Not only that, but Kirby Smart managed to get a ultra-talented former Clemson DB Derion Kendrick, and if Kendrick doesn’t repeat his behaviour at Clemson, where he was booted after police found him passed out in a

A quick 20 gripes about the SEC

I love the SEC. It’s got awesome players, awesome facilities, but there’s stuff that really, really pisses me off that I thinks important to moan about before the season. I would put this on my Twitter feed (@SECBlog, folks), but it’s long. And rambling. So here’s a quick 1 -20: Nick Saban: What a little prick he is. The guy wants everything his own way. Yes, he’s the most worshipped coach in college sports, but there’s no need to act like a dictator. Why doesn’t he just stop being an asshole to the press? And why can’t the journalist that he’s been such a d**khead to say: “Hey man. There’s no need to get so rude.” Yes, I get

How Alabama and the SEC dominated the 2021 NFL Draft

Thanks to years of success, we knew there were going to be a lot of Alabama players taken the NFL Draft. We just didn’t know how successful it would be as part of the SEC’s record 65 total players drafted. Ten Alabama players were taken in all, including six in the first round (Jaylen Waddle, Patrick Surtain, DeVonta Smith, Mac Jones, Alex Leatherwood and Najee Harris), two in the second round (Landon Dickerson and Christian Barmore), and two more in the sixth round (Deonte Brown, Thomas Fletcher). Linebacker Dylan Moses was surprisingly undrafted but was quickly swallowed by the Jaguars, while TE Miller Forristall signed a deal with the Tennessee Titans. Even Carl Tucker – a TE who didn’t play

Ranking the SEC’s non-conference match-ups

Now the Spring Games are finished, it’s time to think about the schedules. We don’t know right now who is in the conference schedule, so we rank the games in order of what we’re excited about. I’m usually less-than-excited about games played on a neutral field, but this year, I’ll make an exception…. THE FANTASTIC  Georgia vs Clemson (September 4): This is going to be a monster. Both teams are expected to compete/ get into the play-off, and we can’t wait to see some of the best players in the country. Drool. Auburn at Penn State (September 18): Auburn play a Big Ten team in regular season play for the first time since 1931 (they played a 7-7

Will the NCAA’s new rule affect SEC teams?

The NCAA yesterday at their annual meeting said that – through all sports – that all athletes who transfer will be granted immediate eligibility for the season after they transfer, instead of having to wait a year. This means that SEC teams will be able to ‘add’ players at speed, rather than wait on the indecision of high school players who might or might not want to come to their campus. At the start, it’ll mean the rich get richer. Nick Saban – speaking before Alabama’s Spring Practice Day – said: “We have thought about a strategy that we’re going to use,” Saban said. “You’ve heard me speak about this before, but now that it is

The SEC: Why you should root for each team

Hello, Mr New SEC fan. You’re looking for a team to root for, and here at the SEC Football Blog we’d like to give a guide. For the record, all of our fanbases get loaded and cook good food before a game on a Saturday. Our fans are obnoxious and quasi-respectful. Our stadiums are monstrous theaters, and our players are generally pretty great. Know this: The school you root for will probably get into trouble with the NCAA – college football’s governing body – at some point, and you’ll try and deny that your guys pay players. It’s not true. They do. Oh, and don’t talk to people about politics, and y’all will be fine. Enjoy your Saturdays in the

The SEC loves black players, hates black head coaches

If I’m an Auburn fan, I wouldn’t understand why my team didn’t even bother interviewing Tony Elliott. Tony Elliott has been in charge of one of the biggest, brightest offenses in college football for 2015-2019, and has coached NFL star in Deshaun Watson, and the next NFL star in Trevor Lawrence. He’s been a master – and has been prettily paid for it by one of college football’s most elite programs. It’s easy to see why Elliott wasn’t even interviewed. The excuse from Greene (who by the way, is African-American) will be that he didn’t bother interviewing anybody, instead of going straight for Boise State’s Brian Harsin – a move which pissed off the already-crazed Auburn booster base. But

Looking at the best Class of ’21 WRs in the SEC…

Heisman Winner DaVonte Smith and Jaylen Waddle are gone. So is Florida standout Kadarious Toney. If we hadn’t already said goodbye to J’Marr Chase last year after he opted out of the 2020 season, he’s definitely not coming back now. Nor is Terrace Marshall, who was like God at the start of the season for LSU before he decided – in my words more than his – not worth getting injured for. Nor is Ole Miss’ Elijah Moore, Auburn speedster Anthony Schwartz and his fellow Tiger Seth Williams. But the class of 2021 has brought with it more and more talent. Sadly for the rest of the SEC, most of that talent is going to the SEC West:

A note to the incoming Alabama football athlete

You wouldn’t know that a below-average sized, thinning-haired, 69-year old male who last played the game when your grandparents were alive, would be able to coax you – the giant among giant on the high school football stage – enough to go and play in a State that to most people would be one they wouldn’t want to visit, let alone live.   And yet year after year, the Pied Piper of Tuscaloosa brings the Gods of American High School into campus and gets them to sign on the dotted line. So here’s a letter to that class. You could replay this letter for many of the major programs, by the way. ***** If you come to Tuscaloosa, you’ll

Tennessee hires Josh Heupel as new head coach. What’s next?

Tennessee has hired former UCF head coach Josh Heupel as its new head coach. Danny White – who is now Tennessee’s AD – was formerly Heupel’s boss at UCF. He’ll be paid $4 million-a-year on a 6-year deal. He said on his press conference: “I believe in a very, very bright future for Tennessee football. I believe that there’s a minor speed bump that we’re going through, but the kids that are in our program right now and the kids that are being recruited are going to have a chance to play and chase championships.” First of all, we know that Tennessee fans would have loved a ‘bigger name hire’, but what self-respecting head coach would want to walk into
