Week 2 rankings: Texas is the King of the SEC (For now)

Texas fans are some of the most arrogant fans in the country. I would know, because I’ve lived here since 2019. When they aren’t beating anyone, they “should”, and when they are beating people, they’ll never lose.

So when they moved to the SEC, they got a bit more honest. They thought they might struggle a bit, and started making their excuses.

And then NIL came along, and Texas fans realized that all that oil money that had a burnt orange tinge to it could be thrown at players, and the school would pretty much overnight become the powerhouse it once was.

Anyway, it’s all working out nicely. So here are our ranks:

1.Texas (2-0): Went to Michigan for one of the biggest ‘Helmet Games’ of the season, and beat the living daylights out of last season’s National Championship Winner. And that was without a run game that went for 4.5 yards per game.

2. UGA (2-0): Ripped up Clemson in Week 1….a win that looks better now Clemson dropped a nuke on Appalachian State on Saturday. The Dawgs played a basketball school and waltzed, but really, the UGA-Texas this is interchangeable.

3. Tennessee (2-0): Only big ranked match-up of the season? No problem for the Vols, who dropped 51 on NC State in a hugely impressive showing both on offense and on defense. The Vols could make a run for the SEC Championship Game.

4. South Carolina (2-0): It wasn’t so much the Old Dominion win as the absolutely dominating one over Kentucky on the road. The Gamecocks torched Kentucky’s offense line within an inch of its life. We’re not saying they’ll make the play-off, but this is some impressive work.

5. Oklahoma (2-0): The win over Temple was great, but only beating Houston 16-2? Eesh. Houston’s bad, man. Now, maybe we’re expecting too much from Oklahoma offenses after being spoilt rotten by Bob Stoops, but this was dire.

6. Vandy (2-0): Virginia Tech is a better with than South Florida (and a lot of crappy teams), yo! That’s why they are where they are (at the moment!). Only 4 wins to go until bowl eligibility!

7. Bama (2-0): Struggle for three quarters against South Florida, before finding a pulse and blasting the Bulls 28-3 in the fourth quarter. But…eesh…

8. Ole Miss (2-0): Play someone with a pulse.

9. Mizzou (2-0): Play someone with a pulse.

10. Arkansas (1-1): You probably think I’m absolutely absurd for saying this, but I feel better about Arkansas’ overtime loss at Oklahoma State in Week 2 – a game that they should have won going away – than A&M or LSU’s wins. Silly to say it, but they pretty much shut down Ollie Gordon, and Taylen Green – who threw for 416 yards in the loss – is going to be quite the weapon.

11. Texas A&M (1-1): The Notre Dame loss is looking awful with the Irish’s home loss to Northern Illinois, so we don’t know quite what to think of their shellacking of McNeese.

12. LSU (1-1): Lost to a USC team who might be pretty good in Week 1, thrashed a basketball school in Week 2. There’s not a lot to say about this team right now, save to say that they are in our thoughts with the hurricane that’s coming a-bounding in.

13. Auburn (1-1): The loss against Cal highlighted one thing to me: WHY ON EARTH DIDN’T HUGH FREEZE PAY THOSE DOLLARS BILLS TO A GOOD QUARTERBACK?

14. Florida (1-1): CJ Langway has got me thinking that he could save Billy Napier’s job. True, it was against Samford, but it was quite the performance – 18-25, 456 yards and 3 TDs to announce yourself.

15. Miss. State (1-1): Well, at least the Mississippi State fans got a trip to Arizona State out of it. And that’s not altogether a bad thing, as I can personally testify.

17. Losing by a nose in the Kentucky Derby, with all your buddies who won laughing their asses off at you.

18. Kentucky (1-1): I wouldn’t mind losing in a close call to a SEC rival, but getting beaten 31-6 by South Carolina when your coach made massive proclamations about staying put in the offseason after trying to get the job at Texas A&M? Not. Good.
