Could a SEC team pick up Caleb Williams?
As if the college football world didn’t need to be stunned any more by the comings and going of transfer portal players and coaches, Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams may just have trounced them all by putting himself in the transfer portal.
With the money and exposure offered to him in SEC world, it wouldn’t be shocking to anybody if he arrives on shores of the Conference Where It All Means More.
We make the case for him to come to every SEC school that’s not Alabama, because Bryce Young and South Carolina, because Spencer Rattler.
And yes, we know that Williams could start at most places in the country.
So here are some likely candidates:
So here’s programs that are forseeable.
- Arkansas: One of Williams’ best weapons at Oklahoma – Jadon Haselwood – has gone to Fayetteville. Of course Sam Pittman will talk the talk about the greatness of KJ Jefferson, but Williams would be quite the upgrade. And the Razorbacks have quite the weapons.
- Ole Miss: Lane Kiffin may have picked up one of the coups of the transfer portal by getting running back Zach Evans – one of the best in his position in the nation – to come to Oxford. Although Luke Altmyer is no slouch, Williams is downright filthy and would be very comfortable in Kiffin’s high-tempo offense.
- Georgia – 309 year-old Stetson Bennett is finally riding off into the NFL sunset as a NFL back-up. The whole JT Daniels situation quite obviously isn’t working out, and although Kirby Smart’s going to tell the world that the Bulldogs don’t need Williams because of Brock Vandergriff and Gunner Stockton, but that’s B.S. Williams is an upgrade on ANY of them. George Pickens and Brock Bowers would kill to have Williams on their team, and if Georgia doesn’t beat Alabama on Monday, then Williams would push the Dawgs over the edge. Oh, and if he arrives, expect Daniels (if he’s not going to already) and Vandergriff to transfer. Both will be welcome on many teams.
- LSU: The Tigers have Myles Brennan returning, which has been cheered on by the LSU faithful. Having said that, the arrival of Williams under the careful watch of a proven winner in Brian Kelly, would be excellent to get other transfer portal guys to return. He’ll have a group of good wide receivers, led by one of the best in college football in Kayson Boutte. And LSU has the financial firepower and countrywide NIL appeal, too.
- Tennessee: Josh Heupel’s offense is just like Oklahoma’s, and Williams wouldn’t take long to get up-to-speed with Heupel’s mind.
- Texas A&M: The Aggies have drafted in Max Johnson, but if they were to get Williams, we think that Johnson would be transferring again at some speed. If Williams is just there for a fat NIL payday, then quite frankly, A&M’s got the money.
- Auburn: Bo Nix has gone and TJ Finley is not the long-term solution. The Tigers aren’t particularly deep at the position, and he’s the sort of player who would be welcome on the Plains.
- Missouri: The Tigers aren’t strong at quarterback now starter Conor Bazelak has said that he’s going to transfer, but they are bringing in the No.1 wide receiver in the country in freshman Luther Burden, who’s going to commit some murder of secondaries next year.
- Florida: Emory Jones’ decision to return may give you tears in a Hallmark Movie, but the decision’s more Grindhouse than Penthouse. In short: Gators fans really dislike him. Now, Anthony Richardson’s been proclaimed as the next starter (or so Gators fans hope), but if Billy Napier wants a quarterback, then Williams would do quite the job. Also, the NIL exposure down in Florida would be MASSIVE.
- Vanderbilt: HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
DEFINITELY AIN’T HAPPENING AT A PLACE THAT AIN’T BAMA OR SOUTH CAROLINA
- Kentucky: The Wildcats already have their power running/quarterback with the strong arm with Will Levis. Even though Williams’ speed would have UK’s fairly moribund offense, Levis ain’t going anywhere.
- Mississippi State: Will Rogers was brilliant last season, and he’ll be the No.1 in his junior year, unless he gets suspended or arrested (and throw in jail), or – and this would be weird – decides he’s had enough of Mike Leach and goes into the transfer portal himself.
