Will Muschamp out at South Carolina head coach
Will Muschamp is out as head coach of South Carolina, the school announced today.
Muschamp will have a buyout of $13 million, so let’s not feel sorry for him.
But as a head coach, he’s been terrible. First it was Florida, 28-21 and 17-15 in-conference – a massive underperformance if you consider how much talent he brought it at the time.
At South Carolina, he’s been poor, leading the team to a 17-22 record and 28-30 overall.
Muschamp’s firing was questionable for a couple of reasons. First of all, South Carolina was losing millions and millions from gate receipts at Williams-Brice. Now the $13 million has added to those problems. Thirdly, it was 2020. This was a year where there was no Spring Practice, and then due to COVD-19 worries, three starters opted out of 2020. This included WR OrTre Smith, who would have given QB Collin Hill more of an offensive option.
Also: If you were going to fire Muschamp, why didn’t South Carolina do it after the debacle of 2019? This year South Carolina lost the games it was meant to lose and scored a huge upset with a win over Auburn. Also, the Gamecocks were pretty competitive in the game against Florida and could have beaten Tennessee. But the last three losses against LSU, A&M and Ole Miss were a trainwreck, with the team giving up over 150 points.
Mike Bobo will be the new interim head coach, but immediately names that have been thrown in are Liberty’s Hugh Freeze and ULL head coach Billy Napier.
